The
young
proteas,
in
the
front
garden,
now
3
years
old
are
well
protected
by
the
young
taaibos
plants
growing
behind.
April
2002. "Taai"
is
Afrikaans
for
tough
and
this
beautiful
shrub
that
flourishes
along
the
Cape
beach
front
is
indeed
tough!
The
'Hottentots-kooigoed'
or
Strawflower
(Helichrysum)
protected
the
taaibos
and
Proteas
on
this
dune
from
the
North
West
the
last
few
winters.
The
original
Strawflowers
that
we
planted
in
1997
have
reached
the
end
of
their
lives
and
their
babies
have
not
grown
to
their
parents
former
size!
This
winter
the
taaibos
will
face
the
occasional
winter
storms
on
its
own
but
fortunately
the
plants
are
looking
strong
and
are
dense,
the
proteas
should
be
safe.
Gardening
on
the
beach
front
is
a
real
challenge!
Once
established
plants
like
Milk woods
and
Taaibos
are
extremely
hardy
and
can
endure
the
harshness
of
the
coastal
weather
but
it
takes
a
while
to
get
there.
Unless
the
taaibos
on
the
North
Western
Dune
is
protected
by
a
more
wind hardy
plant
for
the
first
few
years,
winter
storms
usually
kills
it!
The
succession
of
plants
are
progressing
beautifully
on
this
beach
front
fynbos
garden.
