Fynbos at the Beach House.

Sunset Beach House.

Kommetjie.

Beautiful endemic iris growing in front of the Beach House front door.

The garden at Sunset Beach Guest House has been a constant source of excitement and enjoyment when visiting. Many of the pictures of fynbos plants was taken in the fynbos garden or on the dune in front of Sunset Beach House.

The iris left is growing in front of the front door at the Sunset Beach House.
Apart from the lavender, primrose and Australian guru in the enclosed area next to the beachfront pool, our entire garden consists of endemic 'fynbos' only.

A spectacular display of 'Hotnotskooigoed' in the front Garden at Sunset Beach House. Summer 1998.

Hotnotskooigoed literally translated from Afrikaans means 'Koi's bedding'. The leaves of this endemic plant is soft, pleasant to the touch like dawn and makes a pleasant mattress.
With the help of Steven Wortrich and constant adaptation and adjustment to the forces, notably the salt laden winter North-West, the garden provides a year round display of the magic of fynbos.
The primary vegetation has provided enough protection to make the planting of Proteas feasible and an increasing number has been planted since July 2000.
Please look after the plants and the dune when you visit the Cape and the Beach House. Walk only on the single demarcated pathway across the dune and back to the Beach House. This path leads off from the left of the house. The dogs and others that can not be controlled may have their own paths. The front 2 to 3 meters of the dune immediately adjacent the buffalo grass is irrigated together with the rest of the garden.
The natural dune vegetation is returning in abundance from germination in this area and are thriving. Baby fynbos don't enjoy being trampled on! Click to tour back to previous fynbos page.
