The picture above is of a Chacma baboon, at Olifantsbay, in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.  It is not often that one sees a baboon on the beach and this behavior is unusual amongst apes, but in Cape Point it is not uncommon, as the baboons often roam the beaches feeding on various sea creatures.

This big baboon formed the seaward flank of a large troop that was heading towards the beach. As the baboon approached we packed our picnic into the rug-sacks and zipped it closed. I walked towards the path that the baboon was approaching on. As it came cruising along the edge of the beach I stood my ground in the path, the baboon adjusted his direction slightly and I moved a bit further on which prompted him to readjust his course.

The entire troop that was more in land started appearing over the dune and adjusted their course accordingly. The baboons crossed quiet a distance higher up on the beach to avoid contact. The whole exercise did not even last 10 minutes and we could resume our picnic while the baboons explored the beach further south.

When baboons approach, hide food. Show them clearly and well in advance that you intend protecting your territory.  Maintain an affirmative but non-threatening attitude.
