The
picture above, taken about 5 kilometers from entrance of the reserve,
shows the botanical splendor of
fynbos. The mountain in the background is
Paulsberg, the first in the range that makes up the steep cliffs of the
nearby Cape Point.

The
Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve is only 7750 hectares of land, and yet
sustains more varieties of plants then the whole of British Isles.
The world consists of six floral kingdoms, most of which cover vast areas.
By comparison, the size of the Cape Floral Kingdom or fynbos as it is
locally called, is small, yet it
contains more then 8500 species, making it the richest floral kingdom, for
it's size, worldwide. 6 000 of these species are found nowhere else
in the world. The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve forms part of this
kingdom, and sustains 1100 indigenous plants, of which a number are
endemic (occurs naturally nowhere else in the world).
