Marck Botha
looking down at the Indian Ocean and False
Bay, halfway along the way from
Cape Maclear to Dias lookout
Point.
Marck
is
literally
standing
on
Cape
Point!
|
|
|
This
fascinating walk from Cape Maclear to Dias Look Out Point at the tip
of Cape Point is unique in that one not only
walks along the highest sea cliffs in Africa
but
also
on the South-Western most
tip of the continent. A truly amazing landscape.
One can not see the
new lighthouse
from the top of
Cape Maclear
at the old
lighthouse. The geometry of Cape Maclear and Cape Point is such that the Cliffs
of Cape
Point obscures it. The mountain behind Marck is Cape Maclear
and one can see the old lighthouse on its summit.

The left border of the picture is made up of the Cape Point Cliffs.
This scenic walk
offers you a magnificent view of the ocean, False Bay, a strange mix of
coastal and mountain fynbos
and the marine life of Cape
Point.The strategic
point of Cape Of Good Hope between two major ocean currents, ensures a
rich
diversity of marine
life. There is a difference between the sea life
between the west of Cape Point and that to the east due to the markedly
differing sea temperatures.
This area also offers
excellent vantage points for whale
viewing. The
Southern Right whale is
the species that is most likely to be seen in False Bay between June and
November. Other species are the Humpback Whale and Bryde's Whale. Seals
and dolphins may also be seen. |

Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW)
station
|
|
|
|
Behind
Marck next to the old lighthouse one can see the tall tower of the Global
Atmosphere Watch Station (GAW). The South African Weather Bureau, together
with the Fraunhofer Institute in Garmish, Germany, maintains a research
laboratory at Cape Point to monitor long term changes in the chemistry of
the earth's atmosphere, which may impact upon climate.
The laboratory which was architecturally designed to blend into the
western slopes of Cape Point, is one of the World Meteorological Organization's
20 Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) stations.
It monitors environmentally important air components. Including trace
gases like ozone, methane and carbon dioxide, as well as solar radiation
and various meteorological parameters. |
|
|
The air at Cape Point is regarded
as being particularly pure for most of the time, thereby providing
insights into such crucial phenomena as stratospheric ozone depletion and
climate
change. |
