To many visitors, the beach walk along the contour path to Slangkop lighthouse from the Kom or "bassinette" (Afrikaans = kommetjie) from which the hamlet gets its name, to Slangkop lighthouse remains a highlight of their visit to Kommetjie. Notice this totally rocky beach, consisting of round loose rocks, in stark contrast to the beaches on the northern end of Kommetjie, where the Beach House is situated. It is this constant contrast of color and texture, also captured in the design and interior of the Beach House and the fynbos garden, that helps to make Kommetjie and the Western Cape and ecological wonderland of beauty and magic. |

Kommetjie
is the only place on the mainland where you can see four types of
cormorants.
Terns and other warders,
African Jackass penguins
and Strandveld birds are
also common. The walkway to the Slangkop Lighthouse from the Kom provides the best viewing of offshore seabirds such as terns, albatrosses, petrels and Cape gannets by telescope (always best during or just after winter northwest storms). Take the virtual Bird Watching Tour for more information. |
