This is the tallest cast iron tower on the South African Coast, 100 feet from base to its balcony.
The walkway from the Kom to the lighthouse is famous for its seabirds. This area provides good viewing of offshore birds such as albatrosses, petrels and Cape gannets by telescope (always best during or just after winter northwest storms).
Although the lighthouse is not visible from the Beach House, its light shines across the bay and the Beach House itself every night. The light from the lighthouse colored the clouds in the night picture of Houtbay bottom right and reflected onto the sea, coloring it a beautiful hue of green. It also produced another interesting effect on the time exposure (top right) just after sunset. Both these pictures were taken from the family room at the Beach House.
