Cape Point The Kom - the small "bowl" from which Kommetjie got its name. This natural "basin" forms the perfect harbor for small boats. The Kommetjie slipway is situated to the right of this picture. The Kom is situated in close proximity to the lighthouse and the delightful walk to the lighthouse starts here. This picture taken on a misty morning from the car park.

The Kom is famous for its land based bird watching opportunities of seabirds and Kommetjie features no less than 3 times in the Cape Bird Route. The Beach House offers its own virtual tour of bird life in the area.

Less Underhill writes: "The Kom, at Kommetjie on the western coastline of the Cape Peninsula, consists of a sheltered bay almost entirely enclosed by a ridge of boulders. These were once part of a Stone Age fish trap. The Kom is an important roost for terns. When conditions are good, it is one of the best sites on land from which to see seabirds.

"Kommetjie offers excellent viewing of seabirds, including
African Black Oystercatcher and gulls. It is the only place on the mainland where you can see four types of cormorants.  Terns and other warders, African Jackass penguins and Strandveld birds are also common.  A walkway to the Slangkop Lighthouse from the "Kom" provides good viewing of offshore birds such as albatrosses, petrels and Cape gannets by telescope (always best during or just after winter northwest storms). This site also features an oystercatcher information board."
