Pelargonium in the center, surrounded by dozens of daisies in the back garden at the Beach House. Indeed part of the magic of fynbos is its apparent lack of vanity. Many a plant, never a perfect flower shall make but lights up the dryness of summer with a sparkle of color that keeps the spring forever in one's mind. |

Looking at the massive variety
of geraniums that is growing in pots and gardens across the globe in multitudes
of pure colors it is difficult to imagine that the original plant from which
florists have cultivated all of these is the Cape pelargonium. There is a
large bank of pelargonium in the garden that requires constant pruning because
of its consuming expansion. (They can be seen quiet well in the
fynbos
garden
page.) The single specimen in the center of this picture came up from
seeds. It is heartening that a number of these started coming up on the dune
and in the surrounding areas. The large daisy bush of pink flowers is also flourishing in the protected nice provided by the barrier of pelargoniums against the winter North Western wind. Like the pelargoniums it provides a virtually year round display of flowers. |
