Proteas
is often the flagship of fynbos and these lovely flowers are exported
worldwide.
Common Pagoda -
Mimetes
cuculatus
Black-beard
Sugarbush - Protea lepicarpodendron
Brown-beard Sugarbush
- Protea speciosa
Red

Houwhoek
Spiderhead - Serruria flagellifolia
The primary vegetation has provided enough protection to make the planting of Proteas
feasible and an increasing number has been planted since July 2000. Many
of these are already thriving. Most proteas that will grow in the alkaline
sandy soil of the
Cape beach front
do not transplant successfully once it
has grown beyond a few centimeters. Proteas are very slow growing plants
taking a few years to become well established.
