The fertile green
valleys of the Cape's wine lands are surrounded by proud mountain ranges.
The wine lands offer not only a very wide selection of excellent wines and
beautiful scenery but a rich and hospitable culture.
The Towns and villages
have many historic homesteads and monuments, and every so often fruit
orchards are to be seen, whose produce may be found in all corners of the
world.
It is the
Mediterranean climate and winter rainfall area of the south-western Cape
that produces some of the best wines in the country. The rich, fertile
soils along the Breede River and especially the areas of Somerset West,
Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, have become world famous for their
whites, reds, sherries, ports and brandies.
The Wine routes
provide an opportunity to taste, appraise and compare a variety of wines.
The Stellenbosch Wine Route is the best known in South Africa,
incorporating 22 private cellars and co-operative wineries, all within 12
km of Stellenbosch and about 35 minutes from the Beach
House.
The Constantia
Wine Route is the oldest in the South Africa and just round the corner (8
min drive) from Sunset Beach House at the base of
the Silvermine Mountains. For more information on this part of the Cape's
winelands,
